More than 11,000 children out exploring thanks to De Ontdekkingsbus

March 18, 2025

This morning, RTL Nieuws featured De Ontdekkingsbus – an initiative of the Jeugdeducatiefonds and the Cultuurfonds, coordinated by the Royal Oostenrijk Group. The aim: to give children from families with fewer financial means the chance to go on a school trip after all.

During the report, pupils from the Archipelschool in Amsterdam travelled with De Ontdekkingsbus to Naturalis. After weeks of learning about prehistory, they finally came face to face with real dinosaurs.

“School trips are incredibly important,” says Hans Spekman of the Jeugdeducatiefonds.
“Because if you've never seen a dinosaur, can you really imagine how big such an animal is? School trips both relax and enrich.”

More and more schools are turning to the Jeugdeducatiefonds for help covering the cost of excursions. When the voluntary parental contribution falls away, it's not just the fun outings that disappear – so do opportunities for children to learn, experience and grow outside the classroom.

In collaboration with 14 coach companies, the Cultuurfonds, the Jeugdeducatiefonds and the Royal Oostenrijk Group have now sent more than 11,000 pupils off to explore, right across the Netherlands.
